Today, I am bringing you some views from a British tea taster who worked in 1924. His identity is unknown. This wonderful piece of thoughts had been appeared in “The Guardian” in 1924. This sounds, great Isn’t it ? that’s the era when our forefathers had good tea. That’s the era when real teas were appreciated. No colourful blends, No confusions created by tisanes markers, herbal infusions like Chamomile, Rooibos etc had not been positioned over tea. Simply speaking our forefathers were sipping real tea.

Quoted,

“I work in a well-ventilated room which has a north light. My “bench” is a waist-high structure about thirty feet long, and on it there are a number of containers holding tea, of which there are about fifty kinds.

All day long I am testing tea, for each chest has to undergo an analytical scrutiny. We will take container No. 1. A few spoonfuls of this tea is put into a strainer, which is allowed to stand in a basin of hot water for ten minutes. I then taste the tea – not by drinking it, but by allowing the merest sip to touch my tongue. That is sufficient for me, but no food may be in my mouth at the time. I mark my observations on a label underneath the container.

And so I taste perhaps twenty other varieties of tea. The basins holding the poorest qualities I push back a few inches against a ledge, and I may thus find myself eventually with three outstanding basins, representing the best of that day’s teas. I will then judge between these three and decide which is the best. It is upon my judgement that the pricings take place.

But there are other tests. Some teas appear and taste very well when they are blank, but look rather mud coloured when milk is introduced, and cause the housewife to blame the “watery milk.” These teas need very careful blending.

I am now and again called upon to taste and test the tea of a big rival firm of tea dealers, although, so that my judgement may be unprejudiced, I am not informed of the fact until after my report is made. This tea is tested by me not so that my employers may introduce into their own wares the best essentials of a rival’s product but to guard themselves against deceit, for I get a number of packets of bad tea returned to me for analysis, so I must know someone is trying to foist a rival’s weak tea as the product of my employers.

Choosing the right leaf is but a minor part in grading and selling tea. The whole art of making a good tea is blending. Messrs — may sell good Ceylon tea, and so may Messrs —. But the latter, because of a better blend, have a greater market. Tea is blended in certain proportions in huge revolving drums which mix and at the same time cleanse of impurities. The drums contain a number of magnets, which withdraw from the tea any nails or wiring which may have fallen in during the opening of a chest.

My calling is not one which can be taught. Perhaps a youngster could have the art grafted upon him, but then only in rare cases. I was born with the gift of a rare and delicate palate. That is my principal tool.”

Even Brits are the ones who planted & commercialized tea in nations like Sri Lanka (Ceylon), India, Kenya etc. As Tea & Coffee Trade Journal had reported, Farrer’s has announced the launch of brand new packaging designs for seven teas in its tea bag range, including Ceylon, Assam, Darjeeling, English Breakfast, Green Tea, De-Caffeinated and Earl Grey. Farrer’s worked with the creative team at Kendal-based design studio Cactus Creative.

Each of the seven designs captures a favourite Lakeland spot and demonstrates the essence of what makes the place Farrer’s calls home so special. Farrer’s hopes that the design may even encourage consumers to get out and explore more of the Lakes themselves.

Dave Walsh, Farrer’s general manager, mentioned: “We really felt it was time to update the packaging designs in our teabag range and we couldn’t be happier with the designs the Cactus team have created. As a company we’ve had so many successes over the last 200 years, and we wanted to create a range of designs that would take us forward into our third century of business. We hope to strengthen the strong emotional ties people have to Farrer’s by remaining true to the landscape that inspires us, whilst forging relationships with new tea drinkers by bringing a sense of adventure to their tea-drinking experience.”

The packaging designs for part of the teabag range are new, but the blends inside haven’t changed and with the addition of Farrer’s new interior product wrapping, customers will find that the teas taste fresher than ever.

Consumers should start to see Farrer’s new designs in tea aisles across the Lake District region shortly, but the rebranded products are available now though Farrer’s online shop.

Tea is the most consumed beverage after water & has got a nearly 5000 years of history. Tea is a way of life in Great Britain. Following Portuguese Princess Catherine’s introduction of tea in 1660 AD, Brits slowly developed their love affair with this wonderful beverage. Eventually it became the national beverage in the country. Tea also provided Brits refreshment, health, stimulation and relaxation to build a massive empire all the world. Now, Tea mass market is dominated by large multinational players like Unilever, Tata, Sara Lee etc. The owner of No 2 British brand, PG Tips is considering quitting the tea business as the traditional cuppa is shunned by a generation of consumers raised on coffee and fashionable herbal tea (Correctly called as “Tisanes / Herbal Infusions”).

Unilever pointed to a slump in sales of black tea as it raised the “for sale” sign over a portfolio of brands that includes Lipton, Brooke Bond and Pukka Herbs.

Still 100 million cups supped every day. But Brits are increasingly drinking coffee in their tea breaks, with 95 million cups downed every day, according to the British Coffee Association. This must be due to emerging service sector / coffee house concept which consumers can enjoy a cup of coffee on the go.

Unilever’s chief executive, Mr. Alan Jope, said traditional tea drinkers were a dying breed, with drinkers of black tea “getting older and consuming less and starting to fall over”. He said traditional “builder’s tea” drinkers were “not into experimenting and trying new products”.

Young consumers, however, are “experience-seeking”, explained Jope of a market shift that has caused the standard cuppa to fall out of favour in developed markets while upmarket brews, which promise everything from a good night’s sleep to an energy boost cash in on the demand for “wellness” products.

a. Black tea is also healthy as green and oolong teas even though there are some minor deviations. But traditional British black tea is consumed with sugar and milk. If you can consume pure black tea, it has also got Theaflavins and Thearubigins which are anti-oxidants in nature. The effect of these is quite similar to 6 catechins available in green and white teas.

Even Brits are the ones who commercialized & planted tea in nations like Sri Lanka (Ceylon), India, Kenya etc. Among so many British tea brands Twinings have got the recognition of serving good teas to British palates since 1706 AD. As The Sun had reported, TWININGS is currently the nation’s best-selling No 1 Tea Brand, overtaking the giant Unilever’s PG Tips for the first time ever.

According to data from Nielsen compiled for The Grocer, sales of the posh teabags has increased by 3.9% to £107.9 million in the 12 months to mid-July.

In comparison, sales of the giant Unilever’s PG Tips dropped by 7.2 per cent to 98.7 million over the same period, as Brits ditched traditional drinks for healthier alternatives and upmarket brews.

But, 72% of UK households still drink standard black tea, the frequency is slowly declining as consumers seek out other types of beverages, according to a separate research from Kantar Worldpanel .

PG tips has also experienced a large sales drip when it comes to traditional builder tea compared to its upmarket tea brand.

Yorkshire Tea came third with sales rising by 5 per cent to £97.6 million, according to Nielsen data

The Grocer said: “Diversifying into areas such as cold infusions and functional teas has paid off for Twining, which gained nearly £4 million.

“Meanwhile, PG Tips slumped below the £100 million mark as it bore the brunt of the black tea decline.”

In my personal opinion, there is nothing wrong with black tea. All black, green, oolong and white teas are derived from the same plant. Traditional British black tea is consumed with milk and sugar which dilutes black tea’s great health benefits. Pure black tea with some natural additives like lemon is a treat to sip. By the mean time, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Twinnings for becoming No 1 tea brand in Britain.
