Ceylon Tea Shone @ UK Parliament

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Meantime, following Portuguese princess Catherine’s introduction of tea in 1660 AD, this wonderful beverage eventually became UK’s favorite drint. Ultimately, tea had the honour of being the national beverage in England. With no doubt, tea provided the refreshment, stimulation, relaxation and good health for Brits to build up a massive empire. Sri Lanka Tea Board is the government body which is responsible for international promotion of Pure Ceylon Tea. As Sri Lanka Tea Board had published, British High Commission, together with Sri Lanka Tea Board organized afternoon tea at the Terrace Pavilion, at the Palace of Westminster on 15th March 2023. The event was a platform to promote Ceylon tea, the finest orthodox tea gifted to the world from Sri Lanka. The Rt Hon the Lord Naseby PC facilitated the event at which over 60 invitees including the Members of the Houses of Parliament, UK government officials, representatives of the UK tea trade, travel and food magazines participated.

Mr Suranaga James Perera, the tutor of the UK Tea Academy conducted a presentation on the ‘Story of Ceylon Tea’ outlining the history of Ceylon Tea introduced to the island nation by the British, as well as the competitive advantage, quality, diversity and sustainability of orthodox Ceylon Teas.

The Rt Hon Lord Naseby spoke of Loolecondera Estate, where the first tea cultivation was planted in Sri Lanka around 150 years ago and his long-standing association with Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is well known as the “Tea Island” which could cater to the satisfaction of any tea connoisseur in the world. Sri Lanka is the third largest tea exporter to the world and the export share in the global tea market is registered at around 15%. Sri Lanka is undisputedly the leading player in the orthodox black tea industry.

Brits are the ones who introduced tea to Sri Lanka, but currently, Ceylon tea’s market share in UK is small as one percent of total tea imports. As true tea lovers, hope Brits will fall in love again with finest Pure Ceylon Tea.

Now scientists have pinpointed that the key ingredient across all of these is flavan-3-ols, a group of plant polyphenols, and they’ve come up with the magic number of how much we should be consuming – 400 to 600 mg a day. Nine Ladies Convinced Bvlgari Hotel in London to Serve Finest Teas Grown by Themselves in Scotland

Tea has been deep rooted in to Scottish souls. But no one would believe that tea can be grown in this wonderful part of the world. You can read my previous post “Quality Tea Could be Grown in Scotland – with Little Assistance from Scientists” to gain a better idea on teas grown in Scotland. As Tea & Coffee Trade Journal had reported, The founders of Tea Gardens of Scotland have landed orders of their Nine Ladies Dancing and Frisky Rascal teas with the luxury Bvlgari Hotel in Knightsbridge. Their signature tea, Nine Ladies Dancing, a black tea is joined by the Tea Gardens of Scotland’s roasted green tea — the first of its kind to come out of Scotland.

Nine Ladies Dancing is a black tea with amber to light gold liquor, a bright clear cup, and light, delicate, sweet caramel, chocolate, dried fruit, and woody notes. Named Frisky Rascal after a rescued red squirrel, this Perthshire grown green tea has been carefully crafted from the combined leaf of just three independent gardens in the county. It is a roasted green tea with pale green/lemon liquor, a vegetal and floral aroma that is light, smooth with toasted nuts and grilled artichoke notes.

The Bvlgari Hotel and Residences is a luxury boutique hotel in Knightsbridge, London with a distinctive modern burst that oozes glamour and authentic elegance. The Bvlgari Group has hotels worldwide in major cosmopolitan cities and luxury resort destinations with further openings planned over the next few years.

Tea Gardens of Scotland consists of nine female Scottish tea growers who all grow tea in their separate gardens in Perthshire, Fife, Angus, and Kincardineshire. They began planting tea seeds in 2016. For the Nine Ladies Dancing Tea, they all pluck on the same day and combine their leaf to make this black tea. It is pure, 100% Scottish grown tea. Tea Gardens of Scotland has previously sold to Fortnum & Mason, The Royal Penthouse Suite at the Corinthia Hotel and Canton Tea.

This New Study Conducted in UK Suggests Health Benefits of Black Tea

Tea is the most popular beverage in the world after water. Tea is a way of life in UK. Following Portuguese princess Catherine’s introduction of tea in 1660 AD, this wonderful beverage eventually became the nation’s favorite. Ultimately, tea had the honour of being the national beverage in England. With no doubt, tea provided the refreshment, stimulation, relaxation and good health for Brits to build up a massive empire. A new study conducted in UK found that people who drank two or more cups of tea everyday had a 9% to 13% lower risk of death from any cause than people who did not drink tea. Dr. Maki Inoue-Choi, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, National Cancer Institute led the study.

Higher tea consumption was also associated with a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, and stroke. The association was seen regardless of preferred tea temperature, the addition of milk or sugar, and genetic variations affecting the rate at which people metabolize caffeine. 

The findings, which appear Aug. 30, 2022, in the Annals of Internal Medicine, suggest that black tea, even at higher levels of intake, can be part of a healthy diet, the researchers wrote.

The study involved 498,043 men and women between ages 40 and 69 who participated in a large cohort study called UK Biobank. The participants were followed for about 11 years, and death information came from a linked database from the UK National Health Service.

Tea is a rich source of antioxidants which are polyphenols in nature. Catechins are the main form of poly-phenols present in tea green leaves. During Black tea processing, these catechins are converted naturally in to theaflavins (A Poly-phenol) and a part of theaflavins (A Poly-phenol) are further oxidized in to Thearubigins. Poly-phenol oxidase (PPO) is the enzyme responsible for this reaction. This reaction initiates once the leaf is twisted or broken at rolling process. You must have observed the colour change of apple (In to a brown colour) once it cuts in to pieces and keep for a while. Yes, this is the same reaction.

This Elegant Tea Pot Achieved €2.4 Million at An Auction

Tea is the most popular beverage in the world after water. Before inventing the tea bag in early 1900s, loose tea was the main form of tea consumed all over the world. Though tea bag, RTD Tea consumption have increased during last few decades, loose tea consumption is still dominating worldwide. There is no joy other than enjoying a steaming pot of tea. As The Irish Times had reported, for the month that’s in it, when all things culinary are celebrated in The Irish Times during November’s Food Month, it is almost fitting that on November 2nd, a teapot achieved a whopping £2,062,750 (€2,415,963) including premium.

The “exceptionally rare and important imperial Beijing enamel melon-shaped” receptacle from the Qianlong period, dating to about 1738, from the collection of Mrs EA Parry, and thence by descent, is the only example of this unique form and type to remain in a private collection. The two other examples reside at the National Palace Museum, Taipei and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri.

An archival record shows that a single enamel teapot was created and a further pair was subsequently crafted by order of the emperor; according to Bonhams, which conducted the sale, this proves that the teapot was crafted in the imperial enamel workshop early in the Qianlong reign.

By the 18th century, the craft of enamelling on metal had reached its highest point, with forms and designs reflecting the emperor’s extravagant and opulent taste.

The art of sabrage, the technique of opening champagne bottles with a sabre, has fallen out of favour, presumably due to health and safety concerns along with guaranteed wastage of expensive grog. The practice became popular in France, where the sabre was the choice of weaponry during the Napoleonic wars for the Hussars, who had quite a bit to celebrate with their victories across Europe.

A superb “sabre deluxe”, which belonged to Napoleon’s eldest brother Joseph, achieved £312,750 (€365,441) at Bonhams’ Napoleon Bonaparte sale in October.

PG Tips Claims That The Brand is ‘Plastic-Free’ as Unilever Completes Removal of Overwrap

Twinings, Yorkshire Tea, Tetley, Typhoo are some of the leading tea brands in UK. PG Tips owned by Unilever group is also one of them. As Niamh Leonard-Bedwell reported to The Grocer, PG Tips has completed its transition to become completely plastic-free.

The Unilever has already removed the outer plastic overwrap from its entire retail range. In July 2020, it removed the plastic wrap from its 160-pack retail boxes, with plans to remove that from the rest of its pack sizes in the first half of 2021.

At the time, it also became the first major tea brand to remove all plastic from its teabags, by rolling out fully biodegradable plant-based bags made from corn starch across its entire retail range. It originally debuted the biodegradable teabags across a limited number of SKUs in 2018. Last November, PG Tips launched a dedicated TV advertisement to drive awareness of its environmental credentials. The advertisement saw a young girl hosting a tea party with an array of her soft toys. She told them they were switching to PG Tips, because its bags were biodegradable, while some of its rivals still used plastic.

The transition had “already made an impact, with a massive 757 tonnes of oil-based plastic saved from using biodegradable teabags and 46 tonnes of plastic saved from the overwrap being removed”, mentioned Unilever UK&I general manager for tea Fiachra Moloney.

By going completely plastic-free, PG Tips would meet the “clear demand” among consumers “for a cuppa that not only tastes good but does good for the planet”, Moloney added.

“We’ve also made it even easier for customers to make greener choices, with clear messaging of the biodegradable teabags on the front and back of the box”, she said.

The sustainability push comes after Unilever initiated a full strategic review of its global tea business in January 2020, with a sale of the brand reportedly on the cards.

At the time, CEO Alan Jope said the tea business had a “disproportionately large footprint in black tea, which is slower-growing” and a “long track record of being dilutive to growth and margin, so this strategic review announcement means we want to investigate how we can best create value for stakeholders”.

But still even paper tea bags can contain some harmful chemicals like anthraquinone (a carcinogen) in trace amounts. So the best thing is to enjoy a steaming pot of tea made with loose leaf tea with your loving ones.

UK’s First RTD Vegan Tea Lattes Doubles Its Stock, Launches on Amazon

Even in a traditional tea market like UK, Product innovation and marketing play a vital role in attracting younger generation in to tea. As Tea & Coffee Trade Journal had reported, HumaniTea, the brand which created the UK’s first ready-to-drink (RTD) vegan tea lattes in a can, has announced it will be launching its lattes on Amazon in a few weeks.

Amazon will be the brand’s largest retailer to date, and HumaniTea will be featured on the launchpad section, that highlights innovative products from start-ups.

HumaniTea has also scaled up its stock by more than double, as their earlier production in October saw 10,000 cans being manufactured. Now in August, 24,000 cans are due to be produced.

Founder Tina Chen solely created her social enterprise in 2018, which manufactures low sugar drinks, with preservative-free, ethically sourced ingredients, and recyclable packaging. The brand also also donates 5% or more of post-tax profit to wellbeing and sustainability initiatives in its areas of operation.
