The Pekoe Trail honored with the Best Wider World Tourism Project award

Embassy of Sri Lanka in Belgium hosts Ceylon tea promotion event

As Sri Lanka Tea Board had reported, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Belgium hosted the first-ever Ceylon tea promotion and tea tasting event, titled “A Journey of Flavour and Aroma from Sri Lanka to Belgium,” on October 18, 2023, at the Press Club Brussels. This event, organized in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tea Board and the Export Development Board, aimed to promote Ceylon tea’s exceptional quality and rich aroma, in Belgium.

Over 80 participants, including Belgian tea importers, brokers, international tasters, and industry experts, were joined by journalists, media personnel, social media influencers, and bloggers.

Ambassador Grace Asirwatham highlighted Ceylon tea’s 150-year legacy, emphasizing its unique flavours from hand-picked tea leaves grown in diverse Sri Lankan climates. She commended Ceylon tea’s high-quality production, achieved through ethical labour practices and sustainable agriculture. Sri Lanka’s role as the leading exporter of orthodox black tea to the EU, valued at Euro 79 million under EU GSP Plus, was also praised for its positive societal impact.

Ambassador Asirwatham stressed Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainability, global best practices, and partnerships with conservation organizations. Ceylon Tea holds certifications such as Fair Trade, Ethical Tea Partnership, Rainforest Alliance, and multiple organic certifications, underscoring its eco-friendly production.

Cinzia Merlin, a tea expert in Brussels, shared insights into how Ceylon Tea fosters cross-border unity. Panellists from renowned Ceylon Tea brands discussed the quality of Ceylon tea and their contributions to social empowerment and environmental protection.

The participants enjoyed a unique tea-tasting experience, featuring products from top brands. The event showcased the excellence of Ceylon Tea and its pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s economy and global tea culture.

This event had been organized by Australia Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group on 19th June 2023 in Canberra.

The Sri Lanka Tea Board sponsored ‘Ceylon Green Tea Stall on , while ‘Dilmah’, a prominent Ceylon Tea exporter in the Australian market provided gift tea (flavoured green tea) to the invitees. Ceylon tea promotion videos depicting ‘sustainable-grown’ variety of Ceylon tea for the world market were screened at the reception. The event was held alongside a live demonstration on ‘Ceylon Green Tea Tasting Session’ by the staff of the Mission.

It’s not certain how effective the Ceylon green tea promotion will be in these key markets. Sri Lanka is well known and recognized for it’s unique, tasty and high quality black tea. But if Sri Lanka is going to promote green teas, responsible officers have to find ways and means to differentiate from Japanese and Chinese green teas. Japanese and some of the top green teas in China are much more superior than Ceylons while China and Vietnam produces much cheaper green teas to the mass market.

Sri Lanka Donated Tea to Earthquake Stricken Türkiye

As tea lovers, It was really heart-shocking to hear about the recent earth quake in Türkiye. This country with wonderful hospitable people is recognized as the heaviest tea drinking nation since Türkiye has got the highest per-capita tea consumption in the world. One Türkiye person drink about 7 pounds of tea per year. Once they had also been ranked as the No 1 Ceylon Tea importing nation as well. As Sri Lanka Tea Board had reported, The Government of Sri Lanka with the support of the Ceylon Tea Exporters donated a consignment of “Ceylon Tea” on 10 February 2023, to the Ambassador of Türkiye in Colombo to be delivered to the victims of the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye.

Mr. O.L Ameer Ajwad, Director General for Emergency Response of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed over the consignment to the Ambassador of Türkiye Demet Şekercioğlu at the Türkiye Embassy in Colombo.

Foreign Ministry’s Director General for Europe Priyangika Dharmasena, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board Niraj De Mel and Director for Promotion at the Sri Lanka Tea Board Pavithri Peiris were also present at the event.

Ceylon Tea Shone @ The SIAL Paris – 2022 Exhibition

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Sri Lanka Tea Board is the government body which is responsible for international promotion of Pure Ceylon Tea. As Sri Lanka Tea Board had reported, Sri Lanka Export Development Board (SLEDB) and Sri Lanka Tea Board in collaboration with the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Paris successfully organized Sri Lanka Food and Beverage sector participation at the SIAL Paris – 2022 exhibition held from 15th to 19th October 2022 in Parc Des Expositions- Paris Nord Villepinte in Paris. Thirteen (13) Ceylon tea exporters under Sri Lanka Tea Board and Nineteen (19) exporters under Sri Lanka Export Development Board attended this great event.

Before the exhibition, Sri Lanka Embassy shared the contact details of potential importers for all sectors represented by Sri Lankan companies, enabling them to make business meetings with them. In addition to that, the Embassy invited all potential importers to visit Sri Lanka Pavilion and arranged some business to business meeting with potential importers at the pavilion.

SIAL Paris is a one of biggest food and beverage sector exhibitions in the world and it is a flagship industry event on the international stage including some more special events such as SIAL Future Lab, SIAL Start-ups, SIAL Talks, SIAL Insights and Innovations. There was a large area dedicated to national pavilions where the countries could be able to showcase their finest products of their producers in the agri-food industry and share their experiences.
