Browns completes acquisition of James Finlay Kenya

Tea is the most popular beverage in the world after water. So many things are happening in the world of tea just to bring a nice cup of tea to the hands of tea lovers. Finlays is a reputed firm which has got a long history in Kenya and is continuing to invest in the country through its continued ownership of the Saosa tea extracts facility, and its Kenyan tea sourcing and packing operation James Finlay Mombasa. Saosa manufacturers a range of tea extracts and aromas, adding significant value to the Kenyan economy. As Tea & Coffee Trade Journal had reported, Browns Investment PLC has announced the completion of its acquisition of Kenyan tea estates business, James Finlay Kenya, from Finlays.

The sale was first announced in May 2023, with Finlays selecting Browns Investments PLC as the approved buyer based on its strong legacy of guiding its tea estates to continued growth, but also its focus on doing so sustainably while supporting its workforce and local communities.

James Finlay Kenya is a grower, manufacturer and supplier of Kenyan tea. It covers a total self-contained area of 10,300 hectares, including 5,200 hectares of tea fields over nine tea estates. The sale includes all parts of James Finlay Kenya Ltd except the Saosa tea extraction facility which will remain under Finlays’ ownership and will become known as ‘Finlays Extracts, Kenya’.

Headquartered in Colombo, Browns has a proud heritage in operating plantation businesses, owning Maturata Plantations, Hapugastenne Plantations PLC, and Udapussellawa Plantations PLC. It is one of the largest tea producing companies in Sri Lanka consisting of 49 individual estates that stretch across an area of over 30,000 hectares and employs over 10,000 individuals.

As part of the sale agreement, Browns and Finlays have mutually agreed to acknowledge the long-standing support of the local community by offering 15% of shares in James Finlay Kenya for public sale through the Kipsigis Highlands Multipurpose Cooperative Society.

James Finlay Kenya, which will become known as ‘Browns Plantations Kenya’ in due course, is Brown’s first investment in the Kenyan tea industry which it sees as an exciting opportunity for growth. In December 2021, Browns acquired Finlays’ Sri Lankan tea estates business, which has gone from strength to strength, demonstrating Browns’ successful commitment to sustainable growth.

It’s New Year for The Island of Black Tea Amid Crisis

You must be wondering on my claim “The Island of Black Tea”. Nowhere else, it’s Sri Lanka where finest quality Ceylon Teas are coming from. Sri Lanka is also recognized as “The Pearl of Indian Ocean”, “Asia’s Sweetheart” and “The Wonder of Asia”. Due to her specialty, National Geographic Channel has named Sri Lanka as the “No 1 travel destination for 2019”. It’s true that Sri Lanka had few issues recently, but still the nation is quite safe to travel. This pretty island is celebrating her new year on 14th April each year. This is the time when the sun is heading directly towards Sri Lanka (Ceylon).

Ceylon Tea Shone @ ‘Foodex Saudi 2022’ Exhibition

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Sri Lanka Tea Board is the government body which is responsible for international promotion of Pure Ceylon Tea. As Sri Lanka Tea Board had reported, The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh and the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Jeddah in coordination with the Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) took part in ‘Foodex Saudi 2022’, Saudi Arabia’s leading international food and drink trade exhibition which was held from 28 February to 3 March, in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

Under the Sri Lanka Tea Board group stand M/S. Basilur Tea Exports Ltd. and Sri Lanka Tea Board occupy the group stand. Several other Sri Lankan tea exporting companies were also among around 80 exhibitors who showcased their products at this event.  

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia P.M. Amza ceremonially opened the Sri Lanka pavilion at the Foodex Saudi 2022 exhibition. The Acting Consul General in the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Jeddah T.F.M. Aaashiq and the Minister (Commerce) of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh Sanjeewa Pattiwila also participated in the opening ceremony. SLTB Tea Promotion Officer KavindaIlleperuma coordinated the event.

The organisers also facilitated business to business meetings among industry professionals. Several potential Saudi tea importers visited SLTB pavilion to inquire about importing Ceylon Tea.

Finlays Agrees to Sell Sri Lankan Tea Estates Business to Browns Investments PLC

Tea was introduced to Sri Lanka by Brits during colonial era. Scottish planter, Mr. James Taylor was the first to try tea growing and manufacturing at commercial scale in this wonderful Island Nation, Sri Lanka (Colonial Ceylon). Thereafter many reputed tea planters like Sir Thomas Lipton (Founder of Lipton), Mr. John Sumner (Founder of Typhoo) started growing tea in Sri Lanka. Finlays is also one of the most reputed tea growing firms in Sri Lanka. As Finlays had reported on their official website, the company has agreed to sell its Sri Lankan Tea Estates business, that includes Hapugastenne Plantations PLC (HPL) and Udapussellawa Plantations PLC (UPL), to Browns Investments PLC. Browns Investments PLC will be obliged to make a mandatory offer to buy all outstanding shares in UPL and HPL. UPL and HPL comprise 30 tea estates and 20 tea manufacturing plants that sit within six of the seven tea growing regions of Sri Lanka.

Browns Investments PLC is a reputed Sri Lankan firm and part of the LOLC Holdings PLC group companies. Headquartered in Sri Lanka, Browns Investments has a great track record in operating plantations in Sri Lanka. Browns owns Maturata Plantations, one of the 23 regional plantation companies in Sri Lanka consisting of 19 tea gardens which stretch across an area of over 12,000 hectares and employ a workforce of over 5,000.

There will not be an immediate change for any of the employees of either Hapugastenne Plantations PLC and Udapussellawa Plantations PLC and Browns plans to continue to run the business as it has been operated until now.

Finlays will continue to be represented in Sri Lanka by Finlays Colombo Ltd., company’s tea blending and packing operation that sources teas from multiple origins including Hapugastenne and Udapussellawa via the Colombo tea auctions.

Kamantha Amarasekera, Director of Browns Investments PLC mentioned. “Hapugastenne Plantations and Udapussellawa Plantations are two of the best managed and productive plantation companies in Sri Lanka and we are proud to be associated in their future journey. We will work with Finlays to ensure a smooth transition between the two groups. Ceylon Tea Promotion @ The International Bazaar of The Diplomatic Club Syria

As Foreign Ministry – Sri Lanka had reported, as a part of the Economic Diplomacy programme, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Lebanon and the Sri Lanka Tea Board participated at the International Bazaar in Damascus, by exhibiting Ceylon Tea and handicrafts on 09 October 2021 at the Dama Rose hotel in Damascus Syria. The International bazaar had a participation of 19 nations and Sri Lanka stall had prominence.

The Embassy stall was declared open by lighting the traditional oil lamp by the Minister of Education in Syria Dr. Darem Tabbaa, and Chairperson of the Diplomatic club Barry Phillip Gilder. All visitors were served with Ceylon Tea tasting and samples of Ceylon Tea packs.  

Syria is the 7th largest Ceylon Tea importer in the world. In 2020, Syria imported 9.9 million kilos of Ceylon Tea.

Dilmah Tea and Kahawatte Plantations Donate High Dependency Care Unit to A General Hospital in Kandy Tea Growing Region

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profiles by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Tea was first grown commercially in Sri Lanka by the The legendary Scottish planter Mr. James Taylor in 1867. Since then there were many legends who uplifted the premium image of Pure Ceylon Tea. Mr. Merrill J. Fernando, The founder of Premium Tea Brand Dilmah are one of them. As Daily FT had reported, The Merrill J. Fernando High Dependency Care Facility was inaugurated on 16th August 2021 at the, Nawalapitiya District General Hospital. The facility is funded by Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company Plc and its associate Kahawatte Plantations PLC with the facilitation of the MJF Charitable Foundation. This unit will provide specialized medical care for the predominantly tea estate workers in Nawalapitiya, also serving the Central Province. Nawalapitiya is situated in Kandy tea growing region of Sri Lanka.

The facility is housed in a structure which has been comprehensively refurbished to expand DGHN’s clinical care capacity and strengthen its COVID-19 response. The benefit from the unit will go beyond the pandemic in strengthening the hospital’s capacity to care for high-risk patients. The HDU includes the most advanced medical equipment and respiratory support systems to manage patients with severe COVID-19 and other respiratory ailments.

District General Hospital Nawalapitiya (DGHN) presently provides healthcare services for 500,000 people from the surrounding tea estates, and adjacent Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Current hospital capacity is not sufficient to accommodate demand, especially pandemic-related patient surges. The 680-strong staff at DGHN were treated to lunch alongside the opening, in appreciation of their dedication. A broader, regional food and nutrition program is being formulated with details to be announced shortly.

MJF Charitable Foundation‘s activities in the tea plantation sector include emergency relief for families in COVID related distress, study support, entrepreneurship development, childcare, nutrition, education support and other initiatives related to the general welfare of the workers. Amongst other achievements the MJF Foundation Scholarship program has produced doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs and a magistrate from amongst the children of tea estate workers.

Other than its plantations program, the Foundation has Centres for Empowerment, supporting communities in some of the poorest parts of Sri Lanka with education, vocational training, agricultural entrepreneurship, support for microbusiness, nutrition support, IT Education, and programmes for women, youth and children with disabilities. 

The Merrill J. Fernando Foundation has also partnered with MilleniumIT Esp, 99X, Fortude and Microsoft in developing unique disability and teletherapy apps. Prior to the current restrictions the Foundation supported 6,000 people across Sri Lanka daily, with a larger number expected to benefit once pandemic related limitations can be lifted.

B2B Session Conducted by Sri Lanka Tea Board and Tea & Herbal Association Canada

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) is the government body which is responsible for international promotion of Pure Ceylon Tea. As SLTB official Face Book page had reported, A B2B session was conducted on 12th July 2021 by SLTB. During the event, Sri Lankan Tea Exporters and Canada Tea Importers exchanged their views and most importantly Canadian tea importers were educated on Pure Ceylon Tea. This B2B session was organized by Sri Lanka Tea Board and Tea & Herbal Association Canada.
