Sri Lanka Gifts Ceylon Tea to China to fight Corona Virus Epidemic

Corona virus has already made a severe impact to Chinese economy and day to day life. Almost 800 innocent people have lost their lives so far. Under this sad situation, Sri Lanka has decided to donate Ceylon Tea to China to fight corona virus epidemic. As Lankapuwath had reported, Sri Lankan President Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa had a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador Mr. Cheng Xueyuan on February 06 and assured that Sri Lanka stands in solidarity with China during the Corona virus epidemic crisis.

During the meeting, the President on behalf of the Sri Lankan government and people as a gesture of goodwill gifted a consignment of Ceylon black tea to China to fight the epidemic.

President Gotabaya, recalling that he had studied at Wuhan University, has said that he has a special affection for the people in the province and paid close attention to the epidemic.

The Ambassador briefed the President on the latest situation of the epidemic corona virus status and the containment plans and emphasized that China has resolutely adopted a series of powerful measures in the whole country.

“We have the determination, confidence, and ability to win the battle to prevent and control the epidemic,” he said.

The President said he wrote a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping expressing sincere condolences and firm support to the Chinese community on behalf of the Sri Lankan people.

“I also instructed the Sri Lankan government and all sectors of society at the parliament and cabinet meetings to actively respond and cooperate with the Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka to prevent and control the epidemic,” His Excellency said.

Ceylon Tea is one of the best gifts from Sri Lanka to the world. Mother Sri Lanka also donated a consignment of tea bags to bush fire refugees in Australia.

China is among top 10 Ceylon Tea importers in the world. Sri Lanka Had Shipped A Record 11.8 Million Kgs of Tea to China in 2019.

Palaniselvi Won Hayleys Best Tea Plucker Award !

It’s true that Ceylon Tea hasn’t got a long history as Chinese tea. Tea was first grown commercially in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) by Scottish planter James Taylor in 1867. Eventually, Ceylon Tea became one of the finest tasting teas in the world thanks to her overall, well balanced tasting profile with ideal strength, body, aroma and flavour. During this short history, Asia’s Sweetheart (Sri Lanka) had the honour of having highly skilled plantation workers, specially tea pluckers. They are the unsung heroes who really contributed for the betterment of “Pure Ceylon Tea”. As Daily FT had reported, Talawakelle Tea Estates (TTEL) made history after the company emerged as overall winners at the inaugural Hayleys Plantations Best Tea Plucker Competition 2020.

The early stages of the Hayleys Plantations Best Tea Plucker Competition were held across the three companies – TTEL, Kelani Valley Plantations PLC (KVPL) and Horana Plantations PLC – which comprise the Hayleys Plantations sector.

The winner Palaniselvi plucked an incredible 9.7 kg of prime tea in just 30 minutes – amounting to a harvesting rate of 19.4 kg per hour (kg/h) – and topping the judges’ rankings with a score of 88.63%.

Hayleys Plantations will be providing Palaniselvi and four of her family members with an all-expenses paid tour to India as well as an immediate cash-prize of Rs. 40,000 over and above the title of Best Tea Plucker at Hayleys Plantations group for 2020.

Palaniselvi expressed her feelings, “I am so happy to have won the competition and I want to thank our managers, Roshan Rajadurai and Hayleys for giving us extra training on how to improve our harvesting and the chance to take part. My family and friends have been supporting me and giving encouragement throughout and we are all extremely excited to take our first ever flight and trip to India”.

Company-level winners were also presented with similar awards, with first prize winners also being provided with a family trip to India and cash prizes, while second place winners were allowed to pick any location in Sri Lanka for an all-expense paid family trip and third place winners were presented with trophies and valuable vouchers for retail items worth Rs. 20,000.

KVPL Winners

Gold winner: Kamaleshwari for Robgill Estate harvested 16.84 kg/h to receive a score of 82.48%

Silver and Bronze Awards: K. Praba of Ingestre Estate and M. Vellapoobathy of Fordyce Estate.

Horana Plantations Winners

Gold Winner: S. Benedict Mary of Bambarakale Estate with a score of 80.58% and a harvesting rate of 8.45 kg/h.

Silver & Bronze Awards: N. Renuka of Alton Estate and Anandakumari of Gaouravilla Estate.

The final round of the contest was thereafter hosted at the Somerset Estate in Radella.

Sri Lanka Shipped A Record 11.8 Million Kgs of Tea to China in 2019

China is the birthplace of tea. This wonderful beverage is a way of life in this part of the world since it’s discovery way back in 2732 BC by the Chinese Emperor Shen Nong. Chinese people know exactly how to appreciate good teas. Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation Sri Lanka is also recognized as one of the finest tasting teas in the world. As Colombo Gazette had reported, Sri Lanka shipped a highest ever 11.8 Million Kgs of Ceylon tea to China in 2019, Asia Siyaka Commodities PLC said yesterday.

Five years ago the quantity was less than half at 5.3Mn Kg. There has been steady quantity growth year on year but in 2019 85% of tea shipped was in bulk form. China imported a total of 35mnkg in 2018 and Sri Lanka had a 29% share with shipments of 10MnKg, Asia Siyaka said. But in 2019, Sri Lanka lost the pride of being the largest tea exporter to China. India overtook Sri Lanka in 2019.

Overall, it said that major tea producer and exporter countries Sri Lanka, Kenya and India were all in trouble in the year 2019, with tea growers desperately seeking Government assistance to survive another year.

Based on available information, research suggests that in Sri Lanka, India and Kenya tea producers both farmers and companies were making losses due to declined prices. This situation has in fact been building up from end 2017 and has its roots in the El Nino drought in 2016. The tea broker notes with deep concern new predictions of an El Nino in 2020.

Volatile local and regional political problems and declined crude oil prices have impacted demand in Sri Lanka in particular, as the nation relies on North Africa and the Middle East for 52% of its exports. Meanwhile, world tea trade has largely been stagnant over the past 5 years.

Sri Lanka To Donate “Pure Ceylon Tea” for Australian Bushfire Refugees

During last few months we heard few heart breaking news related to fires. Amazon rain forest was burning last year & quite recently we saw the damage did by bushfire in Australia. Over thirty innocent people died and millions of animals also got caught to the fire. Even though Sri Lanka is a small developing island, she raised her helping hand to Australia. As Sri Lankan President’s Office had reported, His Excellency The President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in telephone conversation with The Honourable Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison expressed his empathy to Australians.

President Rajapaksa had sympathized deeply with the families who have lost their loved ones to the bushfire. Having suffered through natural disasters like the 2004 tsunami, floods and so on, President Rajapaksa said that Sri Lankan people fully understand the horror Australian citizens are suffering at this moment.

As world renowned Ceylon Tea is a favorite and comforting beverage to Australian citizens, President Rajapaksa hopes that the tea that Sri Lanka is donating would help raise the spirits of Australians in these trying times. Sri Lanka Tea Board is currently arranging a consignment with Sri Lankan Tea Export Companies to be dispatched as soon as possible. Heritage Teas where I am working for is also going to contribute with 25’000 enveloped tea bags on behalf of innocent bushfire refugees.

Ceylon Tea Strategy Road Map for 2030

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Simply speaking Ceylon Tea is a hug in a cup. It has got the ideal strength, depth, aroma and flavour for a perfect cup of tea. Ceylon tea as an industry under-went many ups and downs in last few decades and faced many Challenges. Loosing Pakistan (World’s No 1 Tea Importing nation) and Egypt (Among top 5 tea importers) markets in 1980s is one of them & currently there is a risk of loosing her traditional markets due to higher price of Ceylon Tea. Political instability of Middle East has also caused loosing bit of demand for this wonderful beverage. With this background Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) Chairman Jayampathy Molligoda explained his views on “Tea Strategy Road Map for 2030” to Sunday Observer. Mr. Molligoda is optimistic the perennial and lucrative industry will bounce back from tough times due to the global factors that have eroded its market share and prices in the recent years.

However, the SLTB chief in no uncertain terms said the quality of tea and maintenance of standards has to be met if the industry is to compete and increase export volumes.

The chairman said “The good news is that after 18 years industry stakeholders comprising the Colombo Tea Traders’ Association, Tea exporters Association, Planters’ Association, the Tea Smallholders Association, The Plantations Minister and the SLTB met to deliberate the way forward for the industry,” He added further saying “if the industry could come to some consensus on the way forward strategy and look after the entire value chain from the grower to big retailer down to the grower export volumes will grow and exporters will be able to pay a better price at the auctions”.

He mentioned at the moment tea planters are facing severe cash flow problems due to the decline in global tea prices which are beyond the control.

“Production and export revenue was low and that partly due to the climate change effects. However adhering to good global agricultural and manufacturing practices productivity could be increased and quality could be maintained,” Mollogoda said

SLTB expects tea production to go pass last year’s figure of around 304 million kgs and export income of around US$ 1.4 billion this year given good climatic conditions prevail.

The SLTB will be backing the tea replanting and infilling program that had been launched in the past and it will be accelerated according to Molligoda. Meanwhile tea exporters showed displeasure over the move to use part of the tea promotion levy on tea replanting as the levy is exclusively for promotion of the Ceylon Tea brand.

In addition to above view points my personal views are as follows,

Ceylon Tea Global Promotion Campaign is under going at the moment. A campaign like this is vital to uplift the image of Pure Ceylon Tea. Reviewing the effectiveness of the campaign is so vital to move forward.
Ceylon Tea Exporters must also be encouraged to compete for overseas shelf space with their own brand & OEM for global brands. It’s also vital for them to find new clients for bulk tea, but exporters often try to grab each other’s clients by quoting lower which is not a sustainable way at all.
Product Diversification: We should think of Innovations like Ready to Drink (RTD) tea (Real Brew / Cold Brew), tea capsules etc. Also Tea has now gone beyond a beverage. Tablets, food products made with tea & tea extracts are emerging at the moment. Ceylon Tea companies must think on this factor as well.
Focus More on Specialty Tea: Tea exporters should partner with producers & encourage them to produce more specialty teas, not only black but also green, oolong and white teas which are emerging in North America & EU. Few players like Lumbini, Herman Tea, Forest Hill Tea & Macduff are already following this direction.

These are just view points. Now It’s high time to prepare a detailed road map for Ceylon tea for the betterment of 2 million people who depend directly & indirectly on Sri Lankan tea industry.

New Plantation Minister Visited Sri Lanka Tea Board

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Newly Appointed Sri Lanka Tea Board Chairman

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Sri Lanka Tea Board is the government body which is responsible for international promotion of Pure Ceylon Tea and regulating the quality of tea exports. By the mean time, As Ada Derana had reported, Former Deputy Chairman of Bogawantalawa Tea Estates PLC, Mr. Jayampathy Molligoda, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board.

Mr. Molligoda has got more than thirty nine years of executive experience in the fields of Financial Management, Strategic Planning & Human Resource Development, Plantation management and International marketing of tea.

Ceylon Tea Shone in Saint Petersburg, Russia

Ceylon Tea coming from the resplendent island nation, Sri Lanka is recognized for her well balanced tasting profile by tea connoisseurs all over the globe. Sri Lanka Tea Board is the government body which is responsible for international promotion of Pure Ceylon Tea. This reputed government body participated the Peterfood International Food Exhibition for Food and Beverage industry, 28th edition of Peterfood Trade Exhibition was held in Saint Petersburg from 19th to 21st November 2019 at Expo Forum in Saint Petersburg in Russia. Two Ceylon Tea exporters exhibited under Sri Lanka Tea Board Pavilion.
