Tregothnan in England Sees Biggest Ever English Tea Harvest

Tea is a way of life in England. English tea tradition has been deep rooted in to English souls. But no one would imagine that the tea is grown in this resplendent island. Tregothnan English tea land is one of them (Web:https://tregothnan.co.uk/). Plymouth Tea (Web:https://www.plymouthtea.co.uk/) is another based in Devon.Britain’s heatwave has seen the biggest ever harvest at Tregothnan tea farm – enough to make one huge number of English tea cuppas.

The soaring temperatures have resulted in the biggest crop of chamomile the country has ever seen.

As the mercury soared around the UK the herb used to make the popular tea flowered in abundance at Tregothnan estate, near Tresillian.

It has now begun harvesting the crop – the largest ever seen in the estate’s 700-year-old gardens.

Tregothnan tea farm’s Bella Percy-Hughes, 36, said the crop, enough for about a million cups of tea, will all thanks to the UK’s ‘mini Mediterranean’ summer.

She said: “Normally it’s grown in the Mediterranean but because we’ve had such a hot climate chamomile production has increased significantly.

“It’s the largest amount of chamomile every harvested in the UK for tea production.

“The crop is being harvested now and then it will be dried in big hot boxes before it is made into tea – when we’re finished we’ll have enough for about a million cups.

“It’s really exciting for us, it’s a great product and we’re really quite proud of it.

“As soon as we had the hot weather with out sign of stopping we knew it would be a good year.

“We can’t tell about next year but we’re increasing the area we are planting chamomile so that will help increase production.”

Tea has been grown at the historic Cornish estate since 1999 and was first harvested in 2005. It began harvesting chamomile in 2006.

Cooper Tea launches first cold brew for food service operators

Cold Brewing process has been emerged as a hot beverage trend during last few years due to better extraction of valuable chemical compounds responsible for a healthy life. Cooper’s Organic Cold Brew Tea Concentrate, developed to cater to restaurants, coffee shops, and other commercial food service applications.

In addition, the concentrates are packed in shelf-stable, 32-ounce miniature milk jugs, to add convenience to the way they are stored. Each jug of concentrate makes 3 gallons of cold brew tea when mixed with water.

This creates an on-demand way of making batches of tea, with 1 gallon, 2 gallons, or a full 3-gallon batch as quantity options. This reduces the amount of stale tea thrown out, conserves water, and improves environmental sustainability in local communities.

A Detailed Overview to Indian Tea Industry – With Facts and Figures

The bulk of Indian tea production is CTC, at 90%, while orthodox accounts for 8.4%. The rest comes from green tea. CTC also makes up 60% of Indian tea exports. Orthodox tea from Assam can on an average fetch Rs 500 per kg, which is twice as high as CTC. Prime Darjeeling orthodox commands prices three times as much as Assam orthodox. Orthodox also costs around 15% more than CTC and is more labour intensive as leaves have to be plucked with more care than for CTC.

There is potential for black tea, says a spokesperson for Tata Global Beverages, which owns brands such as Tata Tea and Tetley varieties. The market for green, specialty, fruit & herbal teas can also be widened, adds the spokesperson. Sales of green tea, thanks to its perceived health benefits, are on the rise. According to Euromonitor, the green tea market grew 22% between 2016 and 2017, albeit on a low base.

Tea is the world’s and India’s beverage of choice, after water. The organised branded tea segment was at about Rs 12,970 crore in 2017, up from Rs 12,240 crore in 2016, according to market research firm Euromonitor International. India is the world’s second largest producer of tea, after China. In 2017-18, it recorded the highest production, at 1,325 million kg, 6% higher than the previous year. Exports grew at more than twice that rate to hit 257 million kg. In 2016, the latest year for which g global data is available, India produced a fourth of the world’s tea but accounted for just over a tenth of total exports, thanks to its huge domestic market. There is scope for Indian tea growers to up their share of the global export market, say experts.

Production Cost
But there are some problems that stop this industry from reaching its potential. Azam Monem, chairman of the Indian Tea Association, says production costs have risen at twice the rate of prices over the past decade. The market is no longer lucrative for producers as prices have stagnated in the Rs 125-132/kg range over the past five years. In the organised sector, labour costs are responsible for two-thirds of the cost of production. He wants the production subsidy for orthodox tea to be raised from Rs 3 a kg to Rs 20 a kg to make it more attractive.

In July, the Assam government hiked daily wages for tea garden workers by Rs 30 to Rs 167, compared with Rs 159 in West Bengal. Estates pay provident fund and gratuity, and provide housing, ration, firewood and medical benefits. Tea estates also have to contend with the rising contribution from small tea growers, who, by definition, cultivate less than 25 acres. Between 2014-15 and 2017-18, their share of Indian tea production has risen from 34% to 47%. The labour costs of these growers are not as high as that of the gardens. “Tea gardens are at a distinct disadvantage compared to small tea growers. The government should ensure a level-playing field,” says Nazrana Ahmed, chairperson of the Assam Tea Planters Association.

In this situation, there have been calls for a shift from CTC to orthodox for a higher price realisation, to ensure better margins, and to tap the export market. “The Indian market has made us complacent. It used to be easy and lucrative,” says Monem. Higher wages, however, have not increased labour strength. Mohammed Ali Hasan, manager of the Simulbarie Tea Company estate in Siliguri, says he has 25% fewer workers than required, which has forced him to turn to mechanised plucking over the past  couple of years. Simulbarie makes CTC.

Darjeeling is known the world over for its first flush and second flush teas. First flush, which is tea plucked in March-April, is smooth on the palate and has a light golden colour. It sells for an average of Rs 1,500 a kg. Some estates get much more for their produce. Second flush, which is plucked between mid-May and mid-July, has fruity notes and a dark amber colour. It fetches around Rs 1,200 a kg.

“Sri Lanka has been able to do an incredible job in marketing their tea and Dilmah (https://www.dilmahtea.com/) is the first brand from south Asia to achieve the kind of scale it has.” Monem, who is also a director at McLeod Russel India, says India does not have a single comparable brand. Gopal Upadhayay, operations manager with Teabox in Siliguri, says despite its long history in tea, India does not even have a tea sommelier course that can match Dilmah’s. Tea is one of Sri Lanka’s key foreign exchange earners.

Around 92% of Sri Lanka’s tea production in 2017 was orthodox and 94% of its production was exported. Dilhan C Fernando, CEO of Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company Plc, says there was an effort by the Sri Lankan government to encourage CTC over orthodox in the 1980s, which his father and founder of the company, Merrill, resisted. Dilmah is sold in 104 countries.

“It was possible for a brand linked to a specific origin to harness the positive sentiments associated with that origin many years ago, although in the current commercial environment the brand needs to make a vastly greater effort, especially in the premium segment,” says Fernando. Countries like India, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Indonesia should move beyond being just bulk tea exporters. “We are exporting the value that should accrue to our economies,” he adds.

DavidsTea, Canada names two new independent directors, chief financial officer resigns

She is also chair of MU, a not-for-profit organization devoted to beautifying the city of Montreal by creating murals that are anchored in local communities.  Ms. Darche holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in graphic design from Université Laval and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Université de Sherbrooke and is a Chartered Director.

Susan L. Burkman is an experienced financial consulting executive.  Throughout her 35 years in the investment banking industry, she has successfully led equity, M&A, and valuation and fairness opinion transactions in excess of $6 billion for Canadian companies across numerous industries.  Since 2007, she has been majority shareholder and President of Burkman Capital Corporation, an investment banking boutique located in Bromont, Québec.  From 1997 to 2007, Ms. Burkman was a partner at Griffiths McBurney and Partners and a Director at GMP Securities where she led the Investment Banking Group in Montreal.  Prior thereto, Ms. Burkman was President of Mathurin-Burkman Inc., an investment banking boutique, a Vice-President and member of the Board of Directors of McNeil Mantha Inc., then a publicly-traded Canadian securities brokerage firm, and held positions with Wood Gundy Securities in Toronto and with the Corporate Banking division of Bank of Montreal.

San Francisco Is Poised To Ban Plastic Straws. That’s Got Bubble Tea Shops Worried

San Francisco may become the next U.S. city to ban plastic straws. The city’s board of supervisors approved the ban on a preliminary basis last week and the final decision is on its agenda Tuesday. That has shops that sell boba, or bubble tea – a drink that has to be sucked through a straw – concerned.

For boba fans, the straw is an integral part of the experience. “Boba is just, in general, an expression, right? Says Alvin Yu, co-owner of the city’s Steep Creamery and Tea. “You have not just tapioca pearls, but you also have aloe jelly, you have these herbal jellies that we make ourselves. And it all requires a straw.”

According to Yelp, more than 200 shops sell bubble tea in San Francisco. All of them will have to change their business practices if the city bans plastic straws to help reduce litter and landfill and combat the amount of single-use plastics that end up polluting the ocean.

The size and shape of plastic straws makes them particularly problematic for the city’s composting and recycling centers, says San Francisco Supervisor Katy Tang, who spearheaded the bill. “When they’re being sorted in the sorting machines, [the straws] just fall through the cracks and so they don’t actually get composted — even if they are, supposedly, made of compostable material,” she says.

That’s why San Francisco’s plastic straw ban goes a step further than similar prohibitions passed by other U.S. cities: Not even plastic that’s compostable is allowed.

Yu says he was lucky. His shop was able to beat the rush and order paper straws in advance of the ban.

Only a few companies manufacture super-sized paper straws big enough for bubble tea. They’re all reporting huge orders and delays lasting up to four months.

But paper is not a perfect fix, says Yu. “Part of the experience of drinking boba is poking a sharp end of a straw through the plastic seal of a cup. And that’s something we wanted to emulate,” he says.

But the paper straws Yu ordered aren’t cut with a point on the end. So he and his staff have to cut them all by hand. The paper straws are also expensive — about 10 times more than plastic straws.

What about drinking bubble tea without a straw? “It’d be really hard,” says boba fan Julie Abad, a customer at Yu’s shop drinking a plain black tea with tapioca and lychee jelly at the bottom. “I think I’d have to pour it into a cup and use a spoon or something.”

Others, like customer Kehlani Penland, just dismissed the idea outright. “Nobody wants to do that when you’re walking and it’s cold outside. You know, you just want to sip it with a straw!”

Right now, Steep Creamery and Tea is offering the paper straws for free. But Yu says that over time, he will have to raise prices.

Still, some environmentally conscious boba consumers, like 10-year old Alice Asoyan, say all this effort is worth it. “Our world is in big danger right now because of plastic, so paper is probably better,” she says.

If the bill passes again on Tuesday, it goes to Mayor London Breed for her signature. She has previously come out in favor of the ban. Businesses will then have until July 2019 to trade in their plastic straws for paper.

Boba lovers can also choose to do what Supervisor Tang suggests: carry a metal straw just for bubble tea.

DavidsTea shareholders sue company founder seeking to have him removed

The founder of leading Canadian online specialty tea retailer DavidsTea Inc. is being sued by company shareholders seeking to have Herschel Segal removed as executive chairman and the election of a new board of directors.

Three Highland Limited partnerships which together own 12.8 per cent of the Montreal-based beverage retailer’s shares filed suit in Quebec Superior Court against Segal and his investment firm Rainy Day Investments.

Rainy Day Investments owns 46.4 per cent of Davids Tea shares.

It says the lawsuit is without merit and contains old, baseless allegations.

Segal says in a statement that DavidsTea won’t be distracted by efforts to turn around the struggling retailer.

DavidsTea, which is not named as a defendant, says it will defend against efforts that affect the election of directors or appointment of management.
