Tea Culture in Azerbaijan & Turkey Enters UNESCO List

Tea is a way of life in Turkey and Azerbaijan. Out of these countries, Turkey has got the highest per capita tea consumption in the world which is around 7 pounds per person per year. But Azerbaijan people also drink lot of tea during the day and it’s a part of their culture. As The New Arab had reported, The culture of tea practiced in both Turkey and Azerbaijan was on Thursday added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, recognized as a symbol of “identity, hospitality and social interaction”.

Black tea, sipped at all hours of the day across Turkey, is traditionally prepared in small samovars, and served in small, tulip-shaped glasses which can be cupped in the palm of the hand.

The UN’s cultural organisation acknowledged the ceremony’s strong social significance in its statement announcing the decision.

“Tea culture in Azerbaijan and Turkiye is an important social practice that shows hospitality, builds and maintains social ties, and is used to celebrate important moments in the lives of communities,” UNESCO said.

It is taken in bazaars across the country, where tea-sellers still walk the streets of cities serving the drink to traders and their customers on metal trays.

In some parts of Azerbaijan, UNESCO noted, people add spices and herbs such as cinnamon, ginger and thyme.

“Tea culture is an essential part of daily life for all layers of society, providing a strong sense of cultural identity,” said the UNESCO statement.

Among the other traditional practices the UN acknowledged on Thursday was the “traditional tea processing techniques and associated social practices” in China.

The tea drunk in Turkey is for the most part harvest in the hills of the northeast of the country overlooking the Black Sea.

Turkey’s famous coffee was acknowledged on the UNESCO list back in 2013, but the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk encouraged the drinking of tea to support national production.

Heaviest Tea Drinking Nation’s Exports Hiked 52% in First Nine Months

Tea is a way of life in Turkey and this wonderful tea drinking nation has got the highest per capita tea consumption in the world which is around 7 pounds per person per year. As Daily SABAH had reported, Turkish tea exports has reached $10.8 million to 103 countries in the first nine months of 2019, according to the Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association (DKİB). The $10.8 million worth tea exports was generated from 3,088 tons of tea exports 

Turkey exported 2,035 tons of tea during the same period of last year, amounting to $8.3 million in revenue. Thus, tea exports climbed 52% in quantity and 30% in revenue compared to the same period of last year.

Belgium was the No 1 importer with USD 4.5 million, followed by Germany with USD 1.5 million and the Northern Cyprus with USD 1 million.

From January-September 2019, 2,170 tons of tea was exported from the Eastern Black Sea region to 23 countries, generating $6.2 million in return.

Şaban Turgut, deputy chairman of DKİIB and chairman of the Tea Sector Committee, mentioned “Turkey’s diversity in tea exports is growing every year. Turkey’s state-owned tea company, ÇAYKUR’s participation in international food fairs was instrumental in expanding Turkish tea’s presence in overseas markets”.

Turkey is also a trading hub for tea. They import teas from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) , India and Africa and then blend & Re-export to surrounding nations.

Most Turkish consumers enjoy tea in extreme hot form which has led to some oral cancers among drinkers. Also they add quite a lot of sugar in to their tea. But overall Turkish people are so passionate on tea and serving tea is an important feature of kind Turkish hospitality.

Tea grown in Turkey exported to 96 countries

Tea is a way of life in Turkey and this wonderful tea loving nation has got the highest per capita tea consumption in  the world which is around 7 pounds per person per year. Turkish tea exports from January to August surpassed $5.715 million in the first eight months of 2018, with Germany being the top importer, according to data obtained by Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association (DKIB).The data showed that 439 tons of tea has been exported to 96 countries worldwide, with Germany being the top buyer with 128 tons, bringing $770,000 of profit.

More than $633,000 worth of sales have been made to North Cyprus, the second top buyer of Turkish tea, and $576,000 worth of sales have been to the United States within eight months, according to the compiled data.

Şaban Turgut, assistant chairman of DKIB, said that Turkish tea has been the most significant agricultural product among Turkey’s exports as it brings the most profit.

Turgut also said that they are especially pleased with the amount of exports made and are making developments in achieving worldwide publicity for the product.

The high demand for Turkish tea, including white tea, stems from the increase in tourism that the country’s been having, Turgut said.

“Due to the increase in Arab tourists in the Black Sea region, there has been a significant demand for tea from Middle Eastern countries,” he said. Further developments in the variety of teas will also be investigated, he added.There has been an increase in the number of eating and drinking festivals in Turkey recently. Tea, which is the most important part of Turkish daily life, has been considered an inextricable part of Turkish drinking culture for centuries.

The Ottomans were introduced to tea about 140 years ago. During the reign of Abdülhamid II, tea was planted on all sides of the empire from Bursa to Aleppo and from Aydın to Erzurum, but it did not hold due to the unfavorable climate in most cities. However, it was soon understood that the Black Sea region was more suitable to grow this plant, and in 1947 the very first tea factory in Turkey was established in Rize — Turkey’s tea-making capital.
