Georgia Shares Tea Imports & Exports Data

Georgia is located in the northernmost part of the globe where tea is cultivated. This tea growing region is situated between the main Caucasian mountain range and the Black sea covers about 500 km long. Tea was first grown commercially in 1885 near Batumi and around 1915, the number of estates rised to 170, covering a land extent of 1000 hectares. By 1932 there were 19 government owned tea farms and 9 processing plants and the extent reached to 25,500 hectares. Georgia established tea in about 56000 hectares in 1993 and the 70 processing plants manufacture about 75 million kg of tea every year. At present in Russia, there are only 1600 hectares under tea and producing 2 million kg. There are plans to increase the land extent under tea in Russia, in the Krasnodar territory, Dagestan, Northern Osetia and Adygeya.
