Tea is the most popular beverage after water. This 5000 year old drink refreshes the mankind all over the world. I am quite certain that most tea lovers are not fans of tea bags. But this story is a different, but an interesting one. As Bharat Sharma reported to India Times, A Russian astronaut saved $150 billion space station 400 Km above earth using a tea bag. Once a leak was detected in one of the modules of the International Space Station that generally flies 400 km above the Earth, astronauts were left in a fix trying to look for an immediate solution in case things were to escalate. Generally, the space station leaks air from some of the modules throughout its journey in Earth’s orbit, that takes 93 minutes per orbit. Each day, the station loses more than 250 grams of air during its 15.5 orbits around Earth, but that’s not always the case, as evident in the case of this leak.

Over the days, the station started losing more than a kilogram every day. Astronauts from different countries – USA, Japan, Russia, Canada, and Europe are generally aboard the station. When the leak occurred, they were compelled to search for its source in the station. To ascertain its source, they sealed all the modules and camped together in one of the extreme end modules of the International Space Station called Zvezda in the Russian part of the station.

To this end, they tested each section of the space station for leaks over the duration of four days. Unfortunately, their experiment wasn’t successful.

The astronauts then realised that the model they were temporarily waiting was the one leaking. The Zvezda module, launched in 2000 is especially important on the ISS because it asissts the station’s life support systems in case of an emergency on the space station.

In October 2020, Russian cosmonaut Anatoly Ivanishin saved the day using a teabag. After setting up a few cameras in the Zvezda module, the cosmonaut cut open the teabag, and sealing its doors. Not much later, they witnessed the tea leaves slowly floating towards a tiny scratch on the metal wall of the space station.

It was no scratch, turns out! The astronauts found it to be a crack through which the air was escaping the space station, that were sealed on the spot using tape and foam. Later, astronauts completely sealed the hole using a drill and applying sealing paste, as per Roscosmos.

The International Space Station is a costly affair. It was built with costs as high as $150 billion before launching on November 20, 1998. On follow up costs, it takes about $3-4 billion each year to maintain the International Space Station. The cracks spotted in the station was caused either by metal fatigue or small meteorites.

Even though tea was commercialized few centuries back, India is considered as one of the origins for the tea plant. Currently, tea is a way of life in India. By the meantime, Indian authorities are planning to ban staple tea bags from 30 June on wards. Below details have been quoted from https://food.ndtv.com/ with some additions and modifications.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), looking at the widespread use of tea bags, has taken cognizance of the potentially harmful staple pins used in packaging made tea leaves in tea bags and is seeking a ban on the pins. The government agency issued a notification to food business operators (FBO), seeking a ban on the use of staple pins in tea bags by June 30 this year. Taking a stand on the issue, FSSAI has asked the FBOs to halt the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of tea bags containing staple pins by the notified deadline. This is the FSSAI’s second notification on the issue of use of staple pins in tea bags.

Earlier last year, the agency had issued a notification saying that it will ban the usage of staple pins in tea bags from January 2019. The notification was issued due to a concern that any loose staple pins used in making tea may be inadvertently ingested by a consumer, leading to serious health implications for them. In response to the notification, FBOs had also raised the issue of high costs of producing staple-less tea bags. FBOs had cited the costs involved in switching to staple-less packing machines and the problem of unavailability of these machines as there are a very few manufacturers for these machines, around the globe.

However, the FSSAI has ruled out the possibility of a ‘blanket extension’, saying that extensions may be granted on a case-to-case basis, but only after reviewing the proof offered by the companies of commitment to make the switch in a specified time frame. The food authority has also requested tea bag manufacturing units to submit individual plans to switch to the new system. The manufacturers will have to find ways to procure the new machines like IMA or make necessary changes to the existing machines. It is not known yet, whether an individual case of a mishap prompted the food authority to issue the notification.

If ingested, the metallic staple pins may lead to injuries in the gums or internal bleeding and other resultant health complications. Knotted bags form a viable alternative to stapled tea bags, but these are very rarely available in the markets around the world.
